Prevagen Review: What is Prevagen?

Prevagen has been seen advertised on TV for years now and is being reviewed by the FDA for its claims. It promises to improve your memory in as little as 3 months, this means improved recall speeds and accuracy. In practical terms this means you can remember names more easily and never forget why you have walked into the room you did effectively mitigating memory loss. Prevagen is manufactured in the U.S., the official website states the main purpose of Prevagen to: Provide a sharper mind, improve healthy functioning of the brain, better memory and clear thinking.

What's in Prevagen and does it work?

Unlike many other nootropic supplements which have their own proprietary matrix of ingredients that make up their "unique" supplement. Prevagen contains it's key ingredient known as apoaequorin protein. The exact volume of this element is not indicated on the label, but if history is of any guide, the amount is probably less than it should be. Apoaequorin is claimed in this case to improve cognitive function, especially in older adults (This probably explains the ads on CNBC).

Some clinical studies are referenced that include 218 adults who supplemented 10mg of apoaequorin daily and the results showed that it improved the ability to recall information. The mechanism of action is thought to improve calcium homeostasis. Generally it is known that calcium dysregulation leads to dementia and cognitive dysfunction, but not always. The key ingredient can help protect neurons from ischemic death and helps regulate intracellular levels of calcium. However the studies are not comprehensive and the exact dosage of the element is to be determined as all our biology is different.

Apoaequorin side effects

There are studies that state that there is a "direct relationship between the consumption of apoaequorin and improvement on a quantitative measure of cognitive function especially when it relates to verbal learning" (and working memory). Pharmacological manipulation of the entry of free calcium (Ca2+) ha s been shown to be effective in increasing some aspects of cognitive function in the aged brain.1

There have been some user reported side effects and complaints that consumers may start reporting with use that can be referenced below, some anecdotal from around the internet shows that some people have related strokes and seizures from ingesting this supplement; along with symptoms that may worsen for those with MS. This supplement can be purchased from Wal-mart, Amazon, GNC, Walgreens, CVS, the supplement sells for about $45 and if purchased online, shipping will cost $6 extra.

Conclusion – is it a scam?

Prevagen isn't a drug that will be recommended by your family care-giver. This is because it is not a pharmaceutical that has been extensively studied, however studies do exist on PubMed if you chose to research this supplement further and decide to give it a try. The FDA has recently asked the company to stop labeling the product as a dietary supplement as the ingredient isn’t natural that is being put in the bottle (claims to be extracted from jellyfish). We advise that you try other supplements such as: Adrafinil or Lumonol. Some improvements however are reported such as an improvements in verbal learning, if that is the only thing you are looking to address. Supplements such as Lumonol take into consideration many other aspects of improved cognition and provide a better bang for your buck and counts as a better alternative.
