Overview and Information

Panax ginseng, also known as Asian ginseng, is a plant that grows in Northeast Asia, Eastern Siberia, and Korea. It is used by people as a medicine. It is usually taken by mouth to enhance concentration, work efficiency, mental thinking, and memory, treat Alzheimer’s disease, improve physical stamina and athletic performance, and prevent muscle deterioration following vigorous exercise.

Panax ginseng is sometimes called as “adaptogen” since some individuals use it as a general tonic to enhance their well-being and to help them cope with stress. It is also used to treat anxiety, depression, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), general fatigue, and multiple sclerosis; for boosting the function of the immune system and for fighting against an infectious lung condition known as cystic fibrosis. The development of these infections is due to a bacterium called pseudomonas.

Some individuals use panax ginseng to treat certain cancers including ovarian cancer, breast cancer, liver cancer, skin cancer, and lung cancer. Others use it to treat swine flu (A-H1N1), anemia, chronic bronchitis, diabetes, pre-diabetes, fever, gastritis (inflammation of the inner lining of the stomach), hangover, HIV or AIDS, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, sexual dysfunction and fertility problems in men, as well as increasing sexual arousal in women.

Some male individuals apply panax ginseng on the skin of their penis as a part of a multi-ingredient to treat premature ejaculation or early orgasm. Panax ginseng manufacturers used it to make cosmetics, soaps, and flavoring in drinks.

According to some studies, panax ginseng also has the ability to treat loss of appetite, bleeding disorders, intestinal problems, vomiting, bad breath, gall stones, insomnia and other sleeping disorders, fibromyalgia, joint pain, nerve pain, headache, dizziness, convulsions, hearing loss, common cold and flu, hot flashes secondary to menopause, disorders of childbirth and pregnancy, hypertension (high blood pressure), heart failure, as well as enhancing a person’s quality of life and slowing the process of aging.

What is the mechanism of action of Panax Ginseng?

Panax ginseng was known to contain numerous active ingredients. Also called as ginsenosides, these chemical compounds play an important role in the number of benefits and effects of panax ginseng. On the other hand, the true mechanism of action is not yet clearly understood. As mentioned earlier, this supplement is considered to be an “adaptogen”; therefore, the ingredients are known to function to normalize multiple body functions.

The actual process is somewhat the same to a chain of command. Numerous glands control the secretions in order to normalize the function of the entire body (one system at a time) and improve overall well-being. The function of the panax ginseng is to aid these glands to function in normal way and keep everything in balance as part of the body’s goal to maintain stability in spite of changes (homeostasis). This means that one of those 20 plus ginsenosides will act as a depressant to one gland and a stimulant to another gland.

The Rg1 group of ginsenosides contains certain steroids that could enhance alertness, increase energy levels and endurance. On the other hand, the Rg1 group of ginsenosides plays a role in boosting numerous maintenance processes in our neurons and fight against age-related cognitive diseases.

An article that was published last 2005 in the Journal of Psychopharmacy discovered that using panax ginseng supplements could enhance cognitive performance in tasks that highly requires long periods of cognitive function. Early research studies also suggest that Panax Ginseng could produce more powerful effects in enhancing memory in an otherwise healthy individual when taken in combination with an herb called Ginkgo Biloba.

What benefits does Panax Ginseng provide?

  • Mental function: Studies show that taking panax ginseng by mouth could enhance mental arithmetic skills, abstract thinking, and reaction times in healthy, middle-aged individuals but not in young individuals. Taking panax ginseng alone could not enhance memory. However, there are some studies that claim that taking panax ginseng in combination with Ginkgo Biloba leaf extract can enhance memory in otherwise healthy individuals aging between 38 and 66.
  • Lung disease known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): Administering panax ginseng by mouth was proven to be effective in improving lung function and some symptoms associated with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
  • Alzheimer's disease: Some evidences show that daily intake of panax ginseng root for up to 12 weeks could enhance mental performance in individuals who are suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Sexual arousal: A specific form of panax ginseng known as Korean red ginseng is known to improve sexual satisfaction and arousal in women after menopause. In addition, utilizing a specific product that contains Korean red ginseng and other ingredients (examples include Daily Wellness Company and ArginMax for Women) could improve the sexual desire in women who reportedly have sexual problems.
  • Erectile dysfunction (ED): Studies show that taking panax ginseng by mouth could enhance sexual function in men who are suffering from erectile dysfunction.
  • Premature ejaculation: It was discovered by some experts that applying a cream that contains panax ginseng, Cistanches deserticola, angelica root, Zanthoxyl species, clover flower, torlidis seed, cinnamon bark, asiasari root, and SS Cream (toad cream) on the skin of the penis for about an hour before sexual intercourse and rinsing it off immediately before intercourse could help prevent early orgasm or premature ejaculation.

Is it safe? What are the side effects of Panax Ginseng?

Panax ginseng is known to be safe when applied to the skin as a part of multi-ingredient product for a short period of time. However, long-term use of it (more than six months) via oral administration could cause unwanted reactions. Experts believe that it may have some hormone-like impacts that can be harmful with long-term use.

The most common side effect associated with the use of panax ginseng is insomnia (difficulty falling asleep). Some users reported to experience breast pain, menstrual problems, high or low blood pressure, increased heart rate, diarrhea, decreased appetite, rash, itching, mood changes, dizziness, vaginal bleeding and many more. Some of the uncommon side effects of panax ginseng include liver damage, severe allergic reactions, and Steven-Johnsons Syndrome.
