Coluracetam Review: What is Coluracetam?

Coluracetam or MKC-231 belongs to the Racetam class of nootropics and is reported to enhance cognition. First registered in 2005, Coluracetam, like other racetams, is a derivative from the parent compound Piracetam. Coluracetam was initially developed and tested by the Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corporation for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease. After failing to reach its end points, Coluracetam was then licensed by the BrainCells Inc. for Major Depressive Disorders. Thereafter, the nootropic was then awarded as a "Qualifying Therapeutic Discovery Program Grant" by the state of California. At present, BrainCells Inc is now out-licensing Coluracetam for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorders (MDD).

Various studies have shown that Coluracetam possesses powerful anxiolytic properties. As a result, it may benefit those suffering from major depressive disorders and general anxiety. Because of these findings, the medical and research field are continuously studying the properties of Coluracetam. Moreover, the nootropic community has interest as it is part of the racetam family known to improve cognitive processes and brain health.

Benefits of Coluracetam -- Does it Work?

As part of the Racetam family, Coluracetam mainly works by increasing choline uptake in both healthy and injured neurons. Because of this, choline influences an increase in the production of Acetylcholine in our brain. Acetylcholine is responsible for an individual's memory, learning and mood. Moreover, it also has a vital role on one's contraction of muscles, the regulation of the endocrine system, and REM or Rapid Eye Movement sleep cycles (2). Because Coluracetam increases the levels of Acetylcholine in the brain, it may result in an enhanced cognitive capability. This includes improved attention span, and faster processing speed. In addition, it may also improves long term memory storage, learning capacity, fluid intelligence, reasoning and focus.

With regards to Coluracetams effect on one's mood, the drug may help people who are in an anxious and depressed state. A study demonstrated results that 36% of subjects who suffered from depression and anxiety have shown significant improvement with the administration of Coluracetam. BrainCells Inc found that a dosage of 80 mg taken per day was useful in treating major depression co-morbid with Generalized Anxiety Disorder.

On the other hand, studies have shown that Coluracetam may benefit those people who have visual problems. This is because the nootropic can actually enhance color vision, recognition and vividness. As a result, this may cater to optic problems such as optic nerve and retinal injuries. In addition, researchers are also conducting further studies and clinical trials to support the claim that Coluracetam is a potential therapeutic drug for the treatment of schizophrenia.

Common to the Racetam class is the production of headaches as its adverse effect. However, this may be remediated easily with the administration of a good choline source like Alpha GPC, CDP Choline, among many others.

3. Stacking Coluracetam - The purpose of stacking coluracetam is to maximize a Coluracetams potential and to yield more positive effects and to eliminate or minimize side effects. Belonging to the family of Racetams, Coluracetam is best stacked with Choline. Some good sources of which include Alpha GPC, Centrophenoxine, Citicoline, among many others. Choline is considered a vital component in a stack involving racetams since racetams act as Cholinergics thus, requiring a good and sustained source of neurotransmitter Acetylcholine.
