Early diagnosis is the key to treating this rare but serious hereditary disorder. Menkes syndrome is an inborn error of metabolism wherein the cells in the body can absorb copper however, are unable to release it. This is basically caused by a defect in the ATP7A gene. As a result, the brain and other body parts do not et sufficient amount of copper instead, they can build up in the small intestine and kidneys. Symptoms of this condition include bone spurs, brittle and kinky hair, feeding difficulties, irritability, hypotonia, mental deterioration, seizures, and skeletal changes.
