This is the Best Smart Pill You Should Be Taking

The Top 3 Best Smart Pills in the Market

We have written many articles about smart pills that improve your memory and prevent cognitive deterioration. We have also written about many preventative measures to address such concerns. However, we have never compiled a list of the top 3 best brain pills that we recommend. The list below has wide consensus on providing cognitive benefits to just about anyone.

We breakdown our Top 3 Smart Pills that the team here takes on a regular basis with results. The criteria takes into consideration these items: overall bang for your buck, minimum amount of side effects, maximum efficacy, ability for synergistic effects (stacking), ability for a measurable change to be quantified and research.

These are the best No-BS Smart Pills to Consider Buying:

1. Vitamin B Complex

When buying Vitamin B please take a look to make sure the daily values are sufficient, the below seems like a good starting point, yes they seem very high but as a water soluble vitamin, any excess will be flushed out so fear not.

Additionally, take a look at the actual vitamins inside, notice that they end with *ate? This generally signals that they are more bioavailable (they can actually be absorbed by your body).

The last point is that it covers the full gamut of the B-vitamins in the correct ratios, this gives you “comprehensive coverage” as opposed to overloading with just Vitamin B-12 that most consumers do. Sometimes vitamins can be potentiated better with the help of other vitamins and nutrients and thats what this Vitamin B complex does.

Consider searching and purchasing Vitamin B complex from here.

2. Uridine or Choline Bitartrate as a smart pill

Choline and Uridine are good for the brain

As you can see choline is also included in the above Vitamin B complex, but incase you weren’t able to purchase one that has it, we recommend supplementing more of it alongside. Additionally we prefer Uridine (which can be expensive). Uridine will help you with memory/recall, ability to pay more attention and neuroplasticity.

What is neuroplasticity?

“The capacity of the nervous system to develop new neuronal connections: research on neuroplasticity of the brain after injury.”

If you want a cheaper alternative that is not as “potent” as Uridine or if you can’t find Uridine, consider choline bitartrate. With this “raw” ingredient your brain can create more acetylcholine which helps with memory formatting and motor function in the brain. There have been countless studies done that show it increases concentration by 19% in seniors and up to 60% for healthy individuals. If you are interested in this supplement, try this recommend source.

Why Should you supplement Uridine?

The main way Uridine is useful for us is that it breaks down into another choline (Phosphatidylcholine). Uridine is also responsible for helping increase dopamine levels in the brain, which is responsible for increasing motivation/mood and helps you focus.

The reason we mention Uridine and a choline source together is because Uridine is a prodrug of CDP Choline. Which means a part of Uridine is converted into Choline when taken together. The results are synergistic and serves to be a better option combined. Buy it by clicking here from our trusted vendor.

3. Fish Oil as a Smart Pill

Fish Oil can be considered a smart pill

Fish oil has been consumed as a overall health supplement by everyone around the world. It is especially useful when it comes to cognition and mood. It helps boost cognition, memory, learning, and reduces inflammation and helps grow new brain cells.

It is known to be safe, it is also not too expensive when bought in large bottles and is very readily available. Fish Oil’s provide Omega-3 fatty acids, the brain loves this type of fat (it also loves Coconut Oil, or MCT Oil).

What do you need more of EPA or DHA in Fish Oil?

However, when supplementing fish oil for cognitive purposes look for oil that is higher in DHA than EPA. Most lower grade fish oil contains higher levels of EPA, but it is the DHA that will benefit you more. DHA is also good to manage depression, anxiety, and for paying attention.

DHA just happens to be the grey matter that exists in our brains, and thus having adequate amounts of it also helps prevent neurodegenerative diseases potentially. The daily dose we recommend is 1,000mg of DHA in your fish oil capsule.

Some recommend skipping Fish Oil and going the vegetarian route which provide DHA from algae, and that is okay as well!

To get Fish oil for free with the order of any of the other supplements, click here. If you are looking to shop for the Algae version click here.

4. Lumonol – The Prestacked Nootropic for Students, Seniors, and Professionals

Pre packed smart supplements

This is a bonus supplement we decided to the add to the list as we have tried and tested Lumonol previously and definitely thinks it should belong in everyone’s cognitive war-chest.

If buying 3 of the other supplements together is not for you, you may buy a pre-stacked supplement like Lumonol which provides all of the benefits and more in one. Their site has over 1,000 positive testimonials from past customers and even we have hundreds of stacks on our platform by users of Lumonol who have reported instant cognitive improvements.

You may see the entire list of supplements in this pre-made stack here. You may additionally order it from here with our discount, it will set you back about $35 for one month’s supply and could be cheaper than buying all 3 of the above.

Additionally, you may also read our comprehensive review of lumonol here. This is by far our top recommendation for its total ingredients, results and safety profile.

So, What is the best smart pill in the market?

It depends on what you need and what you want. If you would like to go with over the counter solutions that have been tested and provide preventative health benefits to your brain, we recommend Fish Oil, Uridine and Vitamin B complex taken together. If you are a college student and need a instant boost for studies, take these three together with a cup of coffee.

If you are a stock trader, or a professional that is already taking the above but may need additional “help”, consider trying Lumonol a proprietary pre-made stack with many of the above supplements and more. This way you can “forget” about taking 30 supplements and just take 1 pill that covers all bases.

Lastly, If you are looking to wander into the smart drug world, we recommend a powerful nootropic called Phenylpiracetam. There are some “nootronauts” that also take anti narcolepsy drugs such as modafinil to stay awake and work longer hours, for which the widely sold option is Adrafinil sold through AbsorbHealth.

Be safe, consult a professional, none of this should be taken as medical advice and remember to track your nootropic stack using TrackMyStack.com

Memory loss has become a real issue in society with more and more people suffering from great mental decline and memory related issues. This is why it is vital to discover and start taking the best memory supplements available.

Students constantly find it hard to compete with others in their class because of the mental pressure, employees feel overworked and business executives find it hard to keep track of everything that goes on.

Thankfully, memory supplements have emerged in the market and some of the best memory supplements can be accessed and bought very reliably now.

If you have been browsing the internet to hunt the best memory booster, memory pills or memory supplements, then you’ve landed on the right place and the right article to improve your memory.

Since there is a wide variety of renowned memory supplements in the market, it gets harder to choose the best one. Simply make sure you understand the ingredients in each supplement and know if there is scientific evidence backing up the usefulness of said ingredients.

Recognized ingredients in memory supplements

Some mixtures of ingredients are usually labeled as a “proprietary blend.” There are more than a few ingredients that improve concentration, increase productivity, help your mood, and are great for your overall brain health but still do not improve your memory.

Not all brain supplements or nootropics address memory problems. Here is a list of the best memory enhancement supplements and their ingredients.

  1. Acetyl-l-Carnitine

Acetyl-l-Carnitine (ALCAR) is an amino acid proven to improve alertness, focus, mental clarity, and mood. It works partly by creating acetylcholine, which is a big neurotransmitter that is responsible for learning, memory, regulating sleep cycle, in addition to performing other brain functions.

ALCAR also works as a potent antioxidant and stops free radical damage in brain cells. Make sure you don’t confuse acetyl-l-carnitine with l-carnitine which is the cheaper variant.

The recommended dose for ALCAR ranges from 630 to 2,500 mg per day and up to 4,000 mg if you are an Alzheimer’s patient.

  1. Alpha GPC

Choline is associated with the formation of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter responsible for learning and memory. Alpha GPC is a bioavailable variant of Choline which actively enters your brain and helps in the formation of proper cell membranes in addition to boosting even more neurotransmitters like dopamine, serotonin and GABA.

When Alpha GPC is used as a memory supplement, it can significantly improve your memory and attention span and counter any age-related mental decline.

A normal dose of Alpha GPC is 300 to 600 mg. Buy it here.

  1. Bacopa Monnieri

Considered one of the best memory supplements since the Ancient times. Bacopa monnieri is a recognized Ayurvedic herb that helped scholars memorize long scriptures. It was used as a popular brain tonic to enhance memory, learning, and concentration and also to treat anxiety, heart and lung problems and digestive disorders.

Bacopa is considered an adaptogen, being a plant that increases resilience to mental and physical stress. It balances the stress hormones and the neurotransmitters dopamine, serotonin, and GABA.

A normal dose of bacopa is 50 to 100 mg taken three times per day, preferably with meals. Buy it here.

  1. Citicoline

Citicoline is a naturally occurring compound in your body that is made with the help of Choline that is found in eggs and most meat.

Citicoline is proven to drastically improve memory, concentration, focus and attention and may work better than the popular study or smart drugs.

It is one of the supplements that is actually powerful enough to cure serious neurological disorders like age-related memory loss, stroke, brain injury, dementia, Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s. Citicoline increases brain energy, protecting the brain from damage, and increasing acetylcholine.

When looking for any Citicoline supplements, you might discover that some contain Cognizin which is the brand name of a highly bioavailable form of Citicoline that has been successfully tested in humans. Make sure you purchase from a reputable source!

A dose of 1,000 to 2,000 mg per day is recommended for optimal cognitive enhancement. Buy it here.

  1. Curcumin

Turmeric is a spice that has been an Ayurvedic natural remedy and also considered one of the best memory supplements (and for the body). Curcumin, turmeric’s main ingredient, can easily improve memory and concentration by increasing blood flow, neurotransmitter formation, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that stimulates brain cell production.

One study also found that Curcumin improves memory and attention in seniors.

When you are choosing a Curcumin supplement, always look for one that’s taken steps to increase bioavailability. Otherwise most of the Curcumin will pass through your intestines without being absorbed.

The recommended dosage is 400 to 600 mg three times every day. Buy it here.

  1. Ginseng

Ginseng is one of the most famous herbs that has had extensive research done on it. In some Chinese medicine it is considered as the elixir of life that brings strength, wisdom, and longevity to users.

For maximum memory improvement, look for a Ginseng supplement which contains Cereboost which is an extract that has studies to back up its claims. It improves your memory, sharpness, alertness and clarity.

You are recommended to take 400 mg daily for the best memory boost. Buy it here.

  1. Huperzine A

Huperzine A is a compound from Chinese club moss which is a herb used for memory improvement. Huperzine A boosts acetylcholine levels by blocking an enzyme that breaks down acetylcholine.

The compound acts as an antioxidant that protects brain cells from oxidation and environmental toxins.

The recommended dosage is 50 to 200 mcg twice a day. Buy it here.

  1. Magnesium Threonate

Magnesium is one of the most underrated minerals because of calcium. Magnesium is needed for over 300 metabolic functions which directly affect brain and mental health.

Magnesium deficiency can cause depression and studies have found links between low magnesium and anxiety, ADHD, aggression, bipolar disorder, panic attacks, and schizophrenia.

If you ever feel “tired but wired” and have trouble sleeping, owing to acing thoughts or leg cramps, magnesium deficiency can be the answer.

Inexpensive magnesium will do little for your brain but Magnesium threonate is a new form of magnesium supplement which can permeate brain cell membranes making it an amazing choice for improving memory, attention, depression, and anxiety.

Supplements containing Magtein are popular since this is a patented brand of magnesium l-threonate that has been a proven cognitive enhancer.

A suggested dose is 1,000 mg twice a day. If you can’t find Magtein, try Magnesium Citrate, buy it here.

  1. Mucuna Pruriens

Mucuna pruriens is a tropical legume known for enhancing memory, mood, and overall brain health. Mucuna pruriens works by increasing levels of the neurotransmitter called Dopamine.

If you feel unfocused, unmotivated, lethargic, and even depressed. you may be low in dopamine. Mucuna pruriens is one of the top supplements to consider taking. It is recommended that you buy a reputable brand and follow their dosage instructions on the label. Buy it here.

  1. Omega-3 Essential Fatty Acids (High DHA)

Omega-3 essential fatty acids are important nutrients for the proper functioning of your brain. The Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) present in these acids is what benefits your body the most. DHA deficiency causes cognitive impairments by shrinking your brain.

DHA itself protects aging brains from memory loss, depression, age-related mental decline, and even Alzheimer’s.

Fish oil has a proven track record of improving brain functions of all kinds including memory, mood, and mental well-being and the same is rather rich in DHA.

Fish oil supplements that contain between 200 to 500 mg of DHA and 700 to 1,000 mg of EPA are generally advised. Buy it here.

  1. Phosphatidylserine

Phosphatidylserine (PS) is a phospholipid found in your brain’s cell membranes. It acts as a regulator for nutrients and waste entering and exiting your brain. This phospholipid reduces the depreciation caused by stress by neutralizing Cortisol which is the stress hormone.

It boosts memory and learning and can help those with ADHD and poor attention spans. Phosphatidylserine protects against age-related mental decline and helps treat Alzheimer’s and other various forms of dementia.

PS can even improve mood and help with depression, especially among seniors. The recommended dose of Phosphatidylserine is 100 mg taken three times a day. Buy it here.

  1. Rhodiola Rosea

Rhodiola rosea is an adaptogenic herb which acts by decreasing Cortisol while also increasing levels of the neurotransmitters serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine.

This is a renowned herbal remedy to try if you think your memory loss is due to excessive amount of stress, or by anxiety, depression, brain fog, or seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

A normal dose is 200 to 600 mg per day. Buy it here.

  1. Vinpocetine

Some studies show that Vinpocetine is a potential treatment for mental decline, dementia, and Alzheimer’s and most clinical studies on Vinpocetine advise a dose of 10 mg three times per day.

For maximum absorption, this is one top-notch supplement you should take with your everyday meals.

Good Memory Supplements to Use with Care

There are some very popular memory supplements that either don’t have sufficient scientific research backing their usage or over-dosage of these supplements can lead to problematic side effects. Learn to use the following with care.

  1. Galantamine

Galantamine is derived from the snowdrop flower and acts by blocking the breakdown of acetylcholine. In the US, it’s approved for treating Alzheimer’s and is available as both a prescription and over-the-counter drug.

However, if your memory loss has you concerned, this is one supplement you should not take before talking to your doctor.

  1. Ginkgo

Ginkgo biloba is a popular herbal remedy used for memory improvement. However, Ginkgo has proven fruitful in improving memory and day-to-day quality of life for dementia and Alzheimer’s patients.

It also helps counter depression and anxiety. Buy it here.

  1. MCT Oil

MCT (medium chain triglyceride) oil is an ingredient found in “Bulletproof” coffee.

MCT oil offers neuro-protective benefits for lots of neurological diseases including Alzheimer’s, dementia, epilepsy, Parkinson’s, stroke, and traumatic brain injury.

According to a study, adults with mild cognitive impairment (MCI), an intermediate stage before dementia, experienced an immediate and significant improvement in memory after taking a single dose of MCT oil.

However, there is little scientific evidence that MCT oil increases mental performance in healthy adults. This can be taken daily and is considered another of those best memory supplements and accepted universally.

  1. Resveratrol

Resveratrol is found in red wine, grapes, and several kinds of berries that is sold as an excellent brain supplement to improve memory and provide protection from age-related mental decline.

However, some studies concluded that there is perhaps no real correlation between Resveratrol levels and any health markers. Buy it here.

  1. EGCG

One of the most vital compounds in green tea is EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) which is especially protective against Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s since it promotes new brain cell formation in the parts of the brain affected by these diseases and reduces risk of Alzheimer’s.

It also counters depression, increases the calming neurotransmitter GABA, and actually changes your brain wave patterns. However, some supplements result in poor absorption of EGCG.

  1. Caffeine

Caffeine is present in coffee and tea, and is added to energy drinks, think drinks, and many brain supplements to boost energy, memory, productivity, and focus. However, you should avoid caffeine if you suffer from anxiety.

Excessive levels of caffeine can cause significant anxiety symptoms. User this in moderation since it is fairly easy to get addicted.

  1. Nicotine

Isolated nicotine which is not derived from smoking tobacco is one of the best cognitive enhancers and more than 40 studies support the fact that nicotine improves memory, attention, accuracy, response time, and fine motor skills pretty safely.

Still, experts advise against this unless you see or talk to a health care professional.

  1. Lumonol

Although not a natural nootropic, this supplement has known to provide most benefits listed above by combining the right dosage of the best supplements mentioned above into a simple pill, made and shipped from the USA. We highly recommend it, buy it here.

Always make sure that you are using a supplement that contains ingredients proven to enhance memory and that you buy the product from a genuine and reputable source.

Natural Cognitive Enhancers

Top Natural Cognitive Enhancers You Need To Try

All the cognitive enhancers below can be referred to as nootropics, cognitive enhancers supply the brain with a high level of neurotransmitters support or cause neurogenesis. It is advisable to know that these cognitive enhancers, as they are natural, take time to come into effect, they are not isolated chemicals that you would get from a lab based supplement. Some of these supplements have been used for literally thousands of years for cognitive enhancement purposes, as is the case of Bacopa in Ayurvedic Medicine.

We are going to skip some of the “mainstream” cognitive enhancement products that you may have already heard about such as: Caffeine, and Ginkgo Biloba. Without further ado, our list of top natural cognitive enhancer reviews below, in descending order of importance to us:

3. Nicotine

Grab a pack of cigarettes, just joking. Although this goes against most people’s immediate sense, hear us out. There are nicotine receptors in your brain, and when entertained, you get more focused and alert. Ever see anyone taking “smoke breaks” to clear their mind so they can come back and focus again…? There is some science to this, however, many people also sip on a coffee when doing this, nicotine negates the effects of coffee, so you should do one or the other. If you have an addictive personality or are an ex-smoker, this is a obvious no-no, but many professors and scientists (not your MD) systematically recommend nicotine (gum, vaporizer or patch) over sipping on coffee for say staying up at night when you need to drive, or need mental clarity and energy.

Don’t believe us? Here is the science! Take a look at any of the following references:

2. MCT Oil

brain octane
Buy This

More specifically Brain Octane Oil, which we have written about many times. The brand we use is BulletProof, you are more than welcome to try any brand you like. Brain Octane just happens to be refined 18X, providing more direct ketone based energy for your brain than MCT Oil, which too is more refined than regular Coconut oil. Your brain loves to use “Fat” or “ketones” for energy rather than carbohydrates. It takes more energy to convert carbs to energy than fat. This should be supplemented 15 minutes before studying, put it in your coffee or just have a teaspoon of it, and your brain will have premium fuel to keep going for up to 2 hours. Have we mentioned Butter coffee? This is natural, healthy, and something you will enjoy, a real tri-fecta win. These guys have come out with brain octane tablet’s which are perfect to travel with as well if you want to check that out. They also have a new product called “Instamix” which has grass-fed butter + brain octane premixed, it act’s as a ‘creamer’ but is healthy. Read More about Brain Octane here.

Bacopa Monnieri (Waterhyssop)

bacopa for brain

Well known as a cognitive enhancing plant — Bhrami in Ayurvedic medicine, it is to be taken at 750mg every night (could possibly need to take up to 3 pills) with a fat source. It is very important that this is a quality product, look for 50% bacognize, which contains a standardized amount of bacosides A and B). The obvious benefits include enhancing the brain with it’s own antioxidant enzymes. It may help with memory, anxiety, mental fatigue and visual processing. Make sure you supplement this for 4 weeks before deciding that it doesn’t work, and even when it does, it is not like caffeine whereas you “just feel it” it will come in the form of being able to remember things that you would not have been able to otherwise.

Lumonol Review

Activated Charcoal Uses & Benefits

Uses for Activated Charcoal

Once upon a time, charcoal was mainly used for barbeques on Sundays. Little did we know that those pieces could actually undergo a process that could improve our health as well as save us from harmful toxins that may be entering our bodies.

Activated charcoal has been gaining its popularity today both in the market and in the medical field. This is mainly because it promises to be an excellent detox agent and can even be used in situations of substance poisoning. Before now it was primarily used in Ayurvedic medicine and Chinese medicine for centuries.

What is activated charcoal good for?

Activated charcoal is made from either peat, coal, wood, coconut shell, or petroleum. It becomes “activated” when it is heated in high temperatures and then oxidized. The fine particles that remain are almost pure carbon, and the resulting structure has an enormous surface area. This gives the charcoal the ability to absorb various chemicals to its surface, capturing, binding, and removing poisonous toxins, heavy metals, and other unwanted chemicals from our bodies. This unique property of activated charcoal is gaining recognition in the medical field, as it is used in the emergency treatment of certain kinds of poisoning.

What are the main uses of activated charcoal?

1. As an antidote for drugs, chemicals, and poisons
Activated charcoal has been used in emergency cases where poisoning may be life threatening. If you have ingested a poison such as bleach, or even alcohol (it can even help with hangovers the next day!), activated charcoal traps these substances before it can be absorbed by the body and cause harm. The substances are then flushed out of the body through bowel movements. The use of activated charcoal is now regarded as a routine part of poisoning protocols within minimum side effects.

2. Use it for general detoxification of your body
Our daily food choices may be highly unhealthy for us, and especially unhealthy for our gut. Processed foods for example, may pose a significant problem not only to our stomachs but also to our general health. They might produce certain toxins that could damage our cells and affect our immune system. How can we get rid ourselves of these toxins you may ponder? Regular use of activated charcoal may help. Due to its absorbent properties, activated charcoal can eliminate these toxins and unwanted bacteria from our bodies, leaving us healthy and feeling fresh.

3. Natural teeth whitener
Joseph Banker, a cosmetic dentist based in New Jersey stated:

“I was super skeptical until I tried it. It’s quite messy, but it does strip away stains and plaque to make your teeth appear whiter.”

Having a high binding ability, activated charcoal can adhere to surface stains that may be caused by consumption of coffee, tea, and sodas to name a few. It can effectively remove these substances after brushing.
How do we use activated charcoal to whiten teeth? You can easily pop open a capsule and pour it in a container. Afterwards, you can turn it into a paste by adding baking soda, your charcoal, salt, coconut mct oil, peppermint oil. Then, use the paste just like a toothpaste and have the entire surface of your teeth covered, leaving it on for 5-10 minutes. Once this is done, rinse your mouth thoroughly and brush your teeth as you would do so normally. Your welcome, we just helped you figure out a new way to whiten those teeth for cheap.

Charcoal Uses

4. For digestive problems and oral hygiene
Because activated charcoal has the ability to eliminate bacteria, it can thus keep us away from bad breath by eliminating certain kinds of bacteria. On the other hand, it also keeps our digestive tract clean through the elimination of bad bacteria that may have inhabited there. This can also help relieve any bloating you may have.

5. Fight heart disease in kidney patients
According to research from Vanderbilt University, activated charcoal may help fight heart disease among kidney patients. Valentina Kon, one of the researchers, stated:

“We found that oral activated charcoal lessens atherosclerotic lesions in experimental mice with kidney damage.”

This can benefit patients with kidney disease, as they have a very high risk of developing atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries, also increasing their risk of death from cardiovascular disease. In addition, she added that “This is especially important because there is no effective treatment for reducing the high rate of cardiovascular mortality in patients with end-stage renal disease.”

6. Anti-aging properties
Because activated charcoal effectively removes harmful substances from our body, it may also slow the rate at which the brain becomes sensitive to toxins and aid in building a better defence mechanism. It may improve the adaptive functioning of organs such as the liver, kidneys and adrenals.

How do you use it?

Activated charcoal is now readily available in tablet or pill form; but before taking it, be sure to contact your doctor or the poison control center as it may reduce the effectiveness of any medicine you may be taking. It can also be consumed as charcoal powder and to prevent it from scattering, be careful when opening and adding water to the container. When in powder form, it can easily be added to your favourite drinks, juices, smoothies and other baked products. When taking the liquid form, make sure you shake it well before using it, since some particles may have settled at the bottom. Yes, you heard right there are pre-mixed charcoal drinks, yum yum.

If you have been told to take activated charcoal with ipecac syrup to treat poisoning, make sure that you do not take this medicine until after you have taken ipecac syrup (used to cause vomiting). Make sure the vomiting has stopped; this usually takes 30 minutes.

It is not recommended that you take this medicine with chocolate syrup, ice cream or sherbet, as it may prevent it from working properly. Also, do not take other medicine or pills within 2 hours of ingesting activated charcoal, since it may prevent the other medicine or supplement from being absorbed in the body readily.

The Best Charcoal Money Can Buy (for cheap)

charcoal facts supplementBy now your probably pondering and murmuring to yourself about the best best charcoal to buy and the one we recommend. It will come as no surprise to you that we recommend getting the coconut charcoal made by BulletProof. Most charcoal tablets come in ineffectively small doses  and are made from shoddy material that is much cheaper then coconut shells used in BP products.  BP product comes is an ultrafine and purified using acid washing (costs more $), to remove any toxic heavy metals that are almost certainly left behind by other supplement companies, also the finer grains works better too, and for a few more bucks, you definitely want to take something that does more good then bad!

How To Really Make BulletProof Coffee

Making Bulletproof Coffee at Home

butter-mct-coffeeCoffee and Caffeine

Caffeine is considered to be one of the most widely used stimulants at the present time. Aside from the other food and beverages such as soda, tea, chocolate, and berries (yes berries), our daily cup of coffee has the highest caffeine content of them all. Although it is not categorized as a nootropic itself, it is still used in the nootropic world extensively and is combined with other supplements because of the countless cognitive and health benefits it provides. Among its benefits include increased alertness, higher attention span, and focus, as well as an improvement in mood through its influence on the Dopaminergic system. Caffeine also serves to have neuroprotective properties and is currently being studied for being a possible treatment for certain conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, asthma, liver cancer and colon cancer.

Now on the other hand, Bulletproof has taken coffee into a much different level. It has widened the potential of how coffee can benefit us and how it can be used for our other needs. Let’s take a look what Bulletproof Coffee really is and know why it has made a huge impact in people’s lives, feel free to grab a coffee, it’s a long read!

What is Bulletproof Coffee?

Bulletproof Coffee has been on a meteoric rise in pop culture, health circles and in the nootropic world. But, what is really special about this coffee? What does it have to offer to the people?

Bulletproof is a brand of coffee that was created by Dave Asprey and was first posted in his blog on 2009. It is made up of ultra low toxin “Upgraded” coffee beans, Brain Octane Oil which as basically an MCT Oil (however, much more refined), and healthy fats from grass-fed butter. However, this recipe is not quite new to us. This is because long before, yak-butter tea drinks are already being practiced especially in Tibet. Now, Dave Asprey has come up to his own version of the said drink- he experimented and came up eventually with Bulletproof Coffee. (1)

Each of the components of Bulletproof Coffee has their own respective roles and thus making up a stronger coffee. Let’s first start off with the Upgraded Coffee Beans. The coffee beans that were used in the Bulletproof Coffee recipe are of high quality and have very low mycotoxin levels (mycotoxins will be discussed further as you read along this article). These beans serve to maximize overall brain function such as a faster processing speed and improved learning and recall. Moreover, the Upgraded coffee beans also help in promoting fat loss. On the other hand, being an MCT Oil, Brain Octane Oil increases ketone production and boosts our metabolic rate by up to 12% (6).

Ketosis, which is increased with the help of Brain Octane Oil found in Bulletproof Coffee, is actually a vital process of our body. It refers to the state where the body enters into a fat burning mode that is also actually good for the brain. However, the normal way to be in a state of ketosis is to eat zero carbs, moderate protein and lots of fats for several days so that your body would in turn burn fat for fuel. But, with Brain Octane Oil embedded on Bulletproof coffee as one of its main ingredients, it will provide a high quality source of fat which is the rarest one with 8-carbon chains. Because of the Brain Octane Oil, your body can use these fats as fuel while raising up your ketone levels. As a result, you hack your Ghrelin and CCK hormones. Ghrelin is the hormone responsible for the sensation of hunger. It tells and alarms our brain that we need to eat and our body needs nutrients. CCK on the other hand, is known as cholecystokinin and is the hormone opposite to Ghrelin’s actions. In contrast, CCK causes you to feel the sensation of being full and will cause you to stop eating. In this way, you can actually hack them and enter into a high energy fat burning mode without being hungry (7).

How do I make Bulletproof Coffee?

All you need to know to make Bulletproof Coffee in 3 simple steps:

Step 1: Get the right Ingredients, Grind & Brew
Given that you have your quality coffee, brew it as you would normally do. Bulletproof Upgraded Coffee Beans may be purchased online.

Step 2: Pre-heat the Blender
To pre-heat the blender, pour an extra amount of boiling water into the blender while your coffee brews. The reason for this is simple, you don’t want your coffee to go cold.

Step 3: Get Ready for Frothy
Remove the hot water from the pre-heated blender, then add bulletproof coffee, 1 tablespoon of butter as needed, and 1 table spoon of MCT Oil. Blend until a thick layer of foam is on top, which should take about 20 seconds.

Bonus Step 4: Optional Stack Upgrades
For your own preference, you may want to add cinnamon, vanilla, dark chocolate, or other sweeteners. Now, your Bulletproof Coffee is ready and you may enjoy its taste and experience its benefits in just a matter of minutes. When you get straight to work, you will notice that you will not feel hungry for at least 2 hours, your brain will work at peak level (provided you have no other health issues), and the coffee will energize you, while being healthy (as an antioxidant, more on this in another post). An additional thing I like to add is Creatine to my coffee, it provides “energy for the neurons in our brain” via ATP and is probably the most widely used supplement.

What makes other coffee “bad”?

Is there really a bad coffee? Are coffees supposed to be happy beverages that can boost our day and add energy? Some coffee lovers might disagree to this but yes, there are bad coffees. Coffees actually become bad due to the presence of mycotoxins.

Mycotoxin basically comes from the Greek words “mykes” or “mukos” which means fungus and from “toxikon” which means poison. It is a secondary metabolite produced by molds that can readily colonize crops such as those precious coffee beans. Apparently, one species of mold can produce many different mycotoxins and a same mycotoxin can be produced by several other species. Among the major types of myycotoxin include the aflatoxins, ochratoxin, citrinin, ergot alkaloids, patulin, and the fusarium (2). Aflatoxin B1 and Ochratoxin A specifically, are the most relevant types of mycotoxins found in the coffee beans. The former is arguably the most potent carcinogen known (3) while the latter may cause acute and chronic effects on the kidneys as well as the brain and is also considered to be a weak carcinogen (4). Mycotoxins in general, can cause diseases such as mycoses and mycotoxicoses in human beings and other vertebrates (5).

The sad news is that according to researches, coffee is one of the largest sources of mycotoxins in the food supply. And these mycotoxins may be found in low quality brands of coffee. Because of this, individuals most especially those who consume coffee every day, should be aware about this to avoid these toxins from damaging the body. At the present, some coffee companies offer mold free coffee, low mycotoxin coffee, and even mycotoxin-free coffee. The only thing is that you should be aware about the quality of the coffee beans and the process that these beans have undergone.

Aside from the presence of mycotoxins, bad coffee may also be coming from the process of roasting itself. Although roasting may destroy about 70-80 % of mycotoxins, some companies may have poor roasting process and may actually contribute to the addition of more toxins in the coffee beans.

Even temperate treatments like cooking do not destroy some mycotoxins. This is also true for the coffee beans. Even though the beans are being processed, some mycotoxins still remain active thus, posing harm to the human health. Although your cup of coffee will still stimulate your happy hormones and will boost your day, then the risk imposed on your health is inevitable. Because of this, we should really know about the quality of coffee we drink so that we will get more from our body and prevent us from accumulating certain diseases.

Now, Bulletproof Coffee also has its edge since the coffee beans are carefully selected to preserve their quality of having very low mycotoxin levels. Moreover, the roasting process also contributes to a reduction of these toxins.

Safety and Side Effects

Just like other drugs and supplements, people respond to caffeine differently thus making some studies vary from one another. As with the case of caffeine, we have the so called “slow” caffeine metabolizers and the “fast” caffeine metabolizers. People who metabolize caffeine slowly yet tend to consume large amounts may have higher chances of having certain conditions.

When taken in moderation, coffee is generally healthy for most individuals. However, it would be best to take only up to 3 to 4 cups of coffee per day. Due to its half life of about 6 hours, it would be best not to take coffee not later than midday since it may interfere with your sleeping at night. Although some people may fall asleep without any difficulty even after drinking coffee, it may still interfere with your deep sleep.

For some individuals, when Caffeine starts to wear off or when they withdraw from Caffeine intake, they may experience restlessness, fatigue, and depression.

Top 10 Brains Foods That Help Improve Memory

improve-brain

I have been researching brain foods that can help improve memory. There is no such thing as a miracle food (oh wait, what about Kale??!) that can make you smarter but the following items can help, you may not need to know the science behind each and every healthy food item, but they are listed below in no particular order. Without further ado, the top foods for your brain:

  1. Beef Liver – It’s high in vitamin b12, provides energy for the brain. B12 deficiency causes nerve and brain damage. This meat rather than lamb, pork tips, contains the highest b12 content.
  2. Asparagus – Protects your brain from dementia and stroke because of its vitamin and mineral content, it also shields it against MCI, stroke and Alzheimer’s dementia.
  3. Fish (and Omega 3 Fatty Acids) – 50% of your brain is made up of fat and the vast majority is fatty acid called DHA, which is a major component of fish or Krill Oil, you should be consuming this for your general health anyway.
  4. Berries and Flavonoids –  Greater intakes of blueberries and strawberries were associated with slower rates of cognitive decline, greater intakes of anthocyanidins and total flavonoids were associated with this trend. Reference: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/22535616
  5. Coffee – Caffeine improves attention span, psychomotor performance and cognitive function, as well as and feelings of well-being, is readily available. Tip: Stack with L-Theanine for a calm attentive focus.
  6. Avocado (Omega 3/Omega 6) – High in fat content and the oleic acid helps with myelin which helps information travel faster in your brain. Oleic acid makes up 1/3rd of the fat in myelin and related foods like almonds and pecans are helpful in speeding up the messaging in our brains.
  7. Coconut oil (medium chain triglycerides or MCT) – Ketones are a fuel to a starved brain, MCT oil provides instant energy to the brain without requiring glucose or sugars or carbs.
  8. Broccoli (calcium/vitamin C) – Broccoli is a good source for lignans, a compound that has proven to improve thinking, reasoning, remembering and learning. Additionally it is also high in glucosinolates which halt the decline of neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Brussel sprouts can do the trick here as well.
  9. Dark chocolate/cacao (flavonols) – Not only will it provide you with endorphins, but they reduce the effects of stress. It is a source of anadamine and it contains phenylethylamine to make you happy. For us, it also increases blood flow to the brain boosting memory, reaction time and helps with attention span. Working memory speed can be improved for up to 2 hours by 30% by drinking 2 cups of hot chocolate. Reference: http://www.neurology.org/content/early/2013/08/07/WNL.0b013e3182a351aa.short
  10. Spinach (folate and vitamin E) – Spinach is packed with antioxidants that block free radicals. The accumulation of free radicals in the brain is linked to mental decline. Tests on rats showed, rats performed better on a memory and learning test that were fed spinach. Blueberries could be a good alternative as well.
  11. Bonus: Tomatoes (lycopene) – Tomatoes help your brain! Lycopene too is a powerful anti oxidant found in tomatoes, which helps protect against damage that can lead to things like Alzheimer’s.
