Vinpocetine is a semisynthetic drug that contains Vinca minor extracts from the periwinkle plant. It is a vasodilator, meaning it increases the amount of blood flow within the cerebral cotrex thus, improving memory and cognition. Some suggest that it may have neuroprotective properties and improve memory impairment associated with aging. It also has anti-inflammatory effects, which may make it useful in combating symptoms of neurodegenerative disorders. Several clinical trials have been conducted with this drug on those with neurodegenerative disorders, but results are controversial. It works via the inhibition of voltage-sensitive sodium channels, thus preventing damage to neurons. It is considered tolerable in humans, but the tolerability over the long-term is unknown.

PRL-8-53 is a compound that was originally developed in the early 1970s by chemistry professor Nikolaus Hansl at Creighton University. It was initially patented and most researches were also conducted by the patent-holder. Preliminary findings indicated that ingestion of this substance resulted in better word recall after a memorization task. Also, PRL-8-53 has been shown to improve speed of solving math problems, geometric patterns, and verbal abilities. It also displays cholinergic properties, and potentiates dopamine while inhibiting serotonin.
