Ritalin, also known as methylphenidate, Focalin, or Concerta, is a medication approved by the FDA and is used to treat ADD, ADHD and narcolepsy. Its mechanism of action involves inhibiting the reuptake of the neurotransmitter dopamine, leading to increased amounts of dopamine between synapses, thus improving focus, motivation, alertness, and energy. From a nootropic perspective, taking this substance increases efficiency of cortical networks and memory functions.

Bromantane, commonly sold under the brand name "Ladasten" and was developed in Russia in the late 1980's, is known as a unique drug having both actions as a stimulant and anxiolytic. It functions as a Dopamine and Serotonin reuptake inhibitor, increasing the amounts of those neurotransmitters within the synapses between the nerve endings. With this increase in neurotransmitters, Bromantane then causes a person to feel energetic, motivated and euphoric. Because of its energizing effects, it has been used by athletes to improve their performance however, the degree to which it functions as a nootropic is poorly documented.
