PRL-8-53 is a compound that was originally developed in the early 1970s by chemistry professor Nikolaus Hansl at Creighton University. It was initially patented and most researches were also conducted by the patent-holder. Preliminary findings indicated that ingestion of this substance resulted in better word recall after a memorization task. Also, PRL-8-53 has been shown to improve speed of solving math problems, geometric patterns, and verbal abilities. It also displays cholinergic properties, and potentiates dopamine while inhibiting serotonin.

Polygala tenuifolia or Senega is a plant wherein its root is used as medicine in the traditional Chinese practice because of its ability to improve memory and protect against cognitive ailments. Although limited human evidence suggests Polygala tenuifolia cannot improve memory, but many claim that it improves spatial awareness and organization. Moreover, it has been used for the treatment of inflammation of the throat, nose, and chest and for lung conditions including asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema. Also, it acts as an expectorant by loosening phlegm and making it easier to cough up. This is due to the mechanism that Polygala Tenuifolia irritate the stomach lining, which causes production of larger amounts of lung secretion.
